OUTREACH FOR THE HUNGRY

The dedicated members of Outreach for the Hungry make and bring lunch down to Neighborhood House, a soup kitchen in the basement of Our Lady of Mercy Church in downtown Charleston. We cook and serve twice per month. We use the food donated by parishioners on the second Sunday of the month. There are four cooking teams. Each cooking team meets in Madden Hall kitchen at 8:30 AM Sunday mornings and cooks five big pots full of soup or five big casseroles of chili or beefy mac--enough for about 300 servings! They are usually finished by 10 AM. There are two Monday serving teams and two Tuesday serving teams. A serving team meets at Madden Hall at 10:00 AM, loads up two vehicles and six people and goes downtown to serve. The team members heat the food, serve the lunch and clean up. They are back at church before 2:00 PM. Each team, cooking or  serving, works four or five times per year.
